The Best Free Calm Alternatives in 2026

Calm is excellent, but its free tier barely exists. These five apps offer something real without a subscription — listed with their actual limitations, not just their marketing.

What counts as free

Most big wellness apps use the word free to mean a 7-day trial that converts to a subscription unless you cancel in time. For this list, free means you can download the app and keep using something useful indefinitely, without entering a card. Every entry notes what's actually free and what's locked, and every fact was checked in September 2026 — app pricing and features change often, so verify before you commit. We plan to re-check this page every six to twelve months.

One disclosure up front: this list is published by Calming Galaxy, and Calming Galaxy is one of the entries. We've held our own app to the same standard as the others — real pros, real cons — because a list that's secretly an ad helps no one.

Insight Timer — the biggest free meditation library

Insight Timer's claim to fame is scale: tens of thousands of free guided meditations, music tracks, and talks, plus live sessions and a well-regarded meditation timer, all usable without a subscription as of September 2026. If your main interest is guided meditation rather than sleep sounds, this is the strongest free option available.

The trade-offs: the app's size makes it busy, and the free experience includes regular prompts toward its paid courses and membership. Its sleep-specific tooling exists but isn't the star of the show. Best for: meditators who want maximum free content and don't mind a crowded interface.

Medito — completely free, no catch

Medito is a nonprofit project: the app is entirely free, with no ads and no subscription tier, funded by donations as of September 2026. It offers structured meditation courses, sleep content, and breathing exercises — an almost unheard-of deal in this category.

The trade-offs come with the budget: a smaller, slower-growing library, no sound mixer, and fewer sleep-specific features than the paid apps. Best for: anyone who wants a genuinely free meditation app and values the nonprofit model.

Calming Galaxy — the free sound mixer

Our own app takes a different slice of the problem: not meditation courses (we don't offer them), but sound. The free tier includes calm music, the full sound mixer, two nature sounds (Birds and Crickets), live relaxing radio, a sleep timer with a gentle fade-out, and one complete sleep story — no trial, no card required. Premium adds the full sound and story library, offline downloads, and ad-free listening, priced inside the app for your region.

The honest cons: the catalog is far smaller than Calm's, there are no guided-meditation courses, and most of the sound library is Premium. Best for: people who want to mix their own ambient soundscapes and sleep to a free tier that isn't a countdown to a paywall.

BetterSleep — a freemium mixer with a big library

BetterSleep (formerly Relax Melodies) is the established name in mixable sleep sounds: a large library of sounds and melodies you can layer, plus sleep stories and meditations, as of September 2026. It deserves credit for popularizing the sound-mixing idea years ago.

The trade-off: the free version is limited, with much of the library and several features reserved for subscribers, and the app leans on upsell screens. Best for: sound-mixing fans who want the largest possible ingredient list and don't mind a subscription to unlock it.

myNoise — deep sound generators on the web

myNoise is a different animal: a long-running web project of customizable noise generators — rain, fans, drones, and far stranger things — each with multi-band equalizers to shape the sound yourself. The website is free to use and donation-supported as of September 2026, with inexpensive mobile apps alongside it.

The trade-offs: a utilitarian interface that rewards tinkering more than it welcomes tired people, and no sleep stories, guided content, or radio. Best for: tinkerers and focus-seekers who want laboratory-grade control over a soundscape.

How to choose

If guided meditation is the point, start with Medito (fully free) or Insight Timer (the largest free library). If mixable sleep sounds are the point, try Calming Galaxy's free tier or BetterSleep's free version and see whose mixer you like. If you want raw control and don't mind knobs and sliders, myNoise is a treasure.

And if you try two or three and still end up back at Calm's fixed annual subscription — that's a legitimate outcome too. The goal of this list isn't to talk you out of Calm; it's to make sure you know what free actually buys in this category, as of September 2026.
